343industries' Franchise Development Director Frank O'Connor (AKA Stinkles) has been discussing the ranking system we can expect in Halo 4 over on NeoGaf. Many people had hoped we might see the return of Halo 2's 1-50 ranking system or perhaps a variant of Halo 3's 1-50 skill rank along with experienced based military rankings. It doesn't look as though that will be the case:
He goes on to discuss the details a little further:
No doubt this will disappoint some people, but it's hard to argue with Frank and 343's reasoning. It's good to know they're looking for something different to the Reach system, I look forward to hearing more.
- Cowboy Out.
That sucks. I was hoping an improved 1-50 would come back :(
ReplyDeleteLooks like i won't be buying the game.... good job 343... u completely fail just like reach did.
ReplyDelete^I bet $50 this guy still buys Halo 4 on launch.
Delete^I'll raise this guy $50, it's not like not seeing your skill rank diminishes gameplay at all. Why does the Halo community whine so much?
DeleteThank GOD. That system was so flawed and cluttered with fakes! Why can't the community just give them a chance to learn from Bungie's mistakes to make a system that is ultimately better and more rewarding? The things frankie has pointed out on the subject raises large hopes for a ranking system that will actually reflect your skill as a player, and not a petty cheat.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to see what they have up their sleeves before I cast judgement. I loved 1-50 despite boosters I did not care it gave me something to play for. I hope they make something similar for halo 4 that will give me a sense of pride and is a challenge to rank up. Not just credits (spartan point) grinding and pointless ranks like hero legend etc
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see it's not returning. 1-50 was broken (no matter what iteration it was), and honestly, if the game is good, it doesn't need it.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't Frankie you fucks.
ReplyDelete...Yeah, it is
DeleteIf they're throwing it out, they better have something stupendous up their sleeves, because Reach's system just won't cut it.
ReplyDeletePeople against the 50 system... as long as whatever the top rank is YOU cant get to it, because you the bad players hate 50 because you couldn't do it. top .05% need to make top marks, the fucking shits dont need to feel like there part of us, they need to know they are ultimately below and inferior
ReplyDeleteBut the top 0.05% - that's only 1 out of every 2,000 players - do not represent a significant portion of the player base. Why cater to them? It makes no more sense than catering to the 1/20th of one person of players on the opposite end of the bell curve who want every game to have fuel rod starts. They aren't a large enough segment of the population to matter.
DeleteIs rank really that important? Join the military if an emblem is that important to you. Its a game.
ReplyDeleteI do not understand why most the community does not understand this. 1-50 was completely flawed in so many ways that made the system mean nothing. Hopefully 343i finds some type of league system or alternative ranking system for Halo 4's hyper competitive side.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Halo 4 will be shit afterall, like Reach
ReplyDeleteHopefully they come up with something to make us keep playing day after day.
ReplyDeleteThis game is gonna suck...
ReplyDeleteWhile I haven't played Halo 3 in a while, I don't really feel like it had as many boosters as Frankie claims. In my experience, for the most part, people who were over 40 were all pretty good...well at least in ranked playlists anyways. But that's where it was important. Seriously, in social playlists ranks did not even matter. No one played seriously anyways. I really liked that there was such a huge distinction between ranked and social.
ReplyDeleteBesides, who cares if there were boosters. It never made me mad. I only really cared about my own number and raising it. It made each and every ranked game have a lot of weight to it.
And that is where Halo: Reach fails the most. The ranked games never really got my blood pumping. In Halo 3, whenever a game was close I'd get all paranoid/hyper/excited/. I had to win. I had to raise my rank. When it would go up, I'd feel a huge sense of accomplishment. That's an amazing feeling to get while playing a game. And once you got to the upper ranks, all games became a battle of pride. If I saw someone ranked higher than me, my goal would be to do better. If I was someone ranked lower, I was careful not to do worse.
I seriously don't care if there were boosters or not. If trueskill ranking worked properly alongside ranks, then boosters would not still end up playing against people they were fairly matched up against.
Bring back the 1-50 ranking system! Halo is not the same without it.
frankie can go to hell, bye halo
ReplyDeleteoh god, if there is no good ranking in halo 4 it will fail just like halo reach,
ReplyDeleteBoosters? So? What's the problem? If they play and are weak, they can't won any game, it's just a number. So, for this 5% of idiot, you penalized a very high number of player. Good joob, 343 -.-
ReplyDeleteOHHHHH!!! NOOOOOO!!! What are we going to do? If Halo 4 doesn't have a good ranking system it will fail like Reach!
ReplyDelete^^^
I laugh at these kinds of posts. Did you even read the part where Frankie said they have a few things that they are looking at? Since they know what was wrong with all the other ranking systems, I believe they will be able to pull something good out of their asses this time... Hopefully
I still believe in you 343! Keep doing what you are doing!
If these comments (Drux in particular) are any indication of the crowd who support the 1-50 system, I'm quite happy Frankie is not including it.
ReplyDeleteThe 1-50 ranking system is what made online Halo the very best. Everyone wanted the highest ranks possible that's what brought people back to playing time and time again.
DeleteSad to see it is dead. It's all over.
^^^ I personally approve this comment.
ReplyDeleteGive me a million years and I could not write it better myself.
I mean the one about the comments of the 1-50 crowd....
Deletejust would like to point out people are interpreting this wrong... He didn't say 1-50 wasn't coming back, he said that there was no issue with the "nomenclature" or the numbers of 1-50 being used to rank people. Simply that the truskill system BEHIND that 1-50 ranking was flawed. There could be a new and improved 1-50 in h4
ReplyDeleteThat's not what he said. Frank always tows the company line regarding TrueSkill.
DeletePeople are interpreting this wrong though, no 1-50 doesn't mean no skill based ranking. As I said over on Waypoint, people are getting mad about what they're not getting without knowing what they actually will be getting.
ReplyDelete343 (and Bungie) identified substantial flaws in the 1-50 system which negatively influenced player behaviour, which in turn negatively impacted the experience for other players. It would be poor form for them to reintroduce the same system again.
As I said on Waypoint, folks should hold their vitriol until the ranking system has actually been unveiled.
better not be like reach. stupid arena encouraged selfish and stat whoring play wherein some mofo would sit back with snipes and rocket and whore up all the kills. believe me i know, cuz i did it, p.s reach gameplay mechanic is shit
ReplyDeletefrankly i hate ranked in everything halo cod tetris just if its ranked i dont do it too many people ganging up on the best player because both teams feel its all your fault makes you wanna let your partners die a lil more
ReplyDeletei loved halo 2 and halo 3 more than any game out there and it had the best ranking system yeah so there was some boosters out there but if your good u can beat boosters to do that was a great feeling nothing like beating the shit out of a booster that thought they was the shit.........
ReplyDeleteAll the people that say the rank meant nothing are fucking jealous staff captains.
ReplyDelete^true that
