[Spoilers?] Are the New Halo 4 Enemies Actually Very Old Enemies?

The new enemy revealed via McFarlane toys packaging today certainly looks like a totally new enemy at first glance. Following a little bit of digging through the dark recesses of my memory, I think this may not be their first appearance in Halo.
[Spoilers after the jump]
The Crawlers:

I'm sure like me, your first thought was that this was a totally new addition to the Halo universe. However, after a little bit of thinking I remembered these guys:

So far as I'm aware they're unnamed creatures that only ever appeared in the E3 1999 Halo demo.

There's certainly a very close resemblance between the creatures from '99 and the Crawlers we see today. Not identical, but then nothing in the E3 '99 demo made into the games without substantial changes. It's just my theory, but it'd be really cool if 343 were pulling in bits of long lost Halo lore like this.

OT: The new enemy's look kind of Forerunner to me. The Crawler looks indeed like a biological thing, but with Forerunner things implanted. Maybe are the Forerunners using inhabitants that live inside the shieldworld to fight for them. As for the Watcher I'm not really sure, but it looks like some kind of robot to me so maybe a new type of Sentinel?

    2. It's from the back of the packaging of one of the new Halo 4 figures.

  3. Given that the Forerunners are the creators of the Engineers, neither of these two creatures seems implausible as Forerunner creations. I agree that the crawlers look similar to the unnamed creature from the demo, but am not 100% convinced they do not have forelimbs. If they are indeed updated versions of the unnamed creature from the demo it would be a nice nod from 343i to Bungie.

    1. It's difficult to be sure because of the poor resolution and focus in the image, I was just speculating really. You're right about the Engineers being very different in appearance to Forerunners though, I hadn't considered that.

  5. The creatures were meant to be like the moas in Halo: reach (Just simple animals minding their own business) but were cut for a reason I can't remember. Althouhg few people would remember these guys maybe halo was given a look over for cut stuff and then all of those things were adapted for Halo 4. Also I am not the other Anonymous above.
